In this article, we will walk you through the fantastic journey of learning macros in microsoft excel and we also cover, how we use macros, why it is important and what it offers to us.

Macro

An Excel macro is an action or a set of steps that we can record, give a name, save and run as many times as we want and whenever we want. Macros help us save time on repetitive tasks involved in data manipulation and reports that are to be done frequently. When we record a macro, Excel stores it as VBA code and we can view this code in the VBA editor. Macros are time savers for repetitive tasks.

  • To work on macros, we must turn on the hidden tab > Developer.
  • Right-click on the ribbon anywhere and select, Click on Customize the ribbon.
  • Navigate to Customize the ribbon and place a check on the Developer checkbox.

Record a Macro

Now that we have the Developer tab on our ribbon, let’s start recording our first macro in Excel. To record a macro, follow the steps below:

  • On the Developer tab, go to the Code group and click Record Macro.
  • The Record Macro dialog box will appear. Give the macro a name and assign the shortcut that will activate the macro. Then, click on OK.

Note that every step we perform from now on will be recorded by the macro.

  • Create a header, as shown in the figure below.

  • Now, type Ctrl + l. We will get the same format in another sheet. The previous figure is only an example; we can record as long as we want. We can assign the macros in a button.
  • Insert a button from the control group.
  • Select the Macro Name from the list we want to assign, and then click on OK.
  • Now we can run the macro with just a click-on button. We can rename the button by right-clicking on it.
  • Click on a macro to delete, modify or run it in the Code Group of Developer.
